What is it that makes a movie good? What is it that makes a bad movie good? And what is it that makes a movie really, really bad?
I think that the first question can be answered in many ways. One may argue a movie is good if a lot of people like it, and they may have a point. It stands to reason that if a lot of people liked this film then it is a likable film. But, then a lot of people don’t know shit about film. For example many would have like Mission Impossible 2 but this movie was just a bunch of used film ie Gash.
You could argue a film is good when it is techniquely sound, for example Terrence Malick’s “The Lost World” which looks beautiful and has great performances but is lacking in any cock. You could say this film is lacking in cock so much that if it went to toilet it would end up pissing on its balls.
The way I look at it is that a movie is good when it does one of two things, one it subverts genre. Heat is a drama that could almost be considered an action movie, Lord of the Rings (fantasy/action) Stranger than Fiction (drama/comedy). This is a dicey chose in direction but pays off went it is done right. The second is a raw version of the genre. Action movies I find are the easiest at staying true to this formula. A great action movie is a beautiful thing examples of a great action movies are Predator, True Romance, The Chronicles of Riddick, etc. This again is easy to mess up, one need only look at the string of Marvel flops to confirm that, Electra is the biggest steaming load of poo I wonder how it was let out of the studio, do the powers to be have that little respect for the film going community that they would try to slide that gash past us? Daredevil, Aeon Flux (seriously, it’s been a while since I’ve seen butchering of something so cool for a while, though I do like Theron as Aeon, to some I would just negated my previous comments with that one).
But then there’s the movie where it is straight out bullshit. A movie that I love so much because as a nascent and desperately struggling film making these film out there give me so much hope that my films will be made because if they released this crap, this total shit, then I got a good chance to get mine made. My truest example of this film is “One tough Cop” staring Stephen Baldwin and just the finest version of shit ever to be seen.
There’s a difference with this type of film and say the Marine or “See no Evil” another WWE film. These wastes of film aren’t trying to pretend to be anything they aren’t. They’re works of shit from the start and the director knows this and ends up making something entertaining of one level. “One tough Cop” thinks it’s something and I wager it is about half way into shooting it the Director begun to think he won’t have his credit till after half the crews, bury it down deep and move on.
But ultimately a good movie comes from a good script, it is as simple as this. If it is action it will have great lines and the action will be slick and make you go “whooa”. Laughing and going “come on are you serious”? (see “The Island”) is not a good feature of an action movie. Feet shuffling in a drama means it is average. Not being able to look at the screen, or even better thinking for days about the premise (the original “Wicker Man”) is a great horror. And being able to sit through a ro-com means its got to be good.

Good post, about a very subjective topic. I agree with most of your assessment, shame good films are getting harder to find.
