Army of Darkness

At one point directors lose it. They always do, it always happens. Some regain it; coming back more powerful having tamed their craft, mastering the beast that is being an “in” film director, cutting through the bullshit they are lured into, the pathetic pantomimes that they are lead to believe are good for their career, or even worse deluded themselves into thinking they are making an inspired move of genius but no they are actually making Spiderman 3.

Sam Rami has cred, if this were “da hood” and the Scott brothers lived down the way, James Cameron has a crib on the corner of mogul and main. Tarrantino just moved in but his house is vulgar and needs to stripped back to being bare again. John Woo can be seen ghost-riding his whip down the middle line and Spielberg has a stable of whores lined up and chilling in the cut of his blinged out five screen Dolby surround sound toilet. If this was the world of Hollywood, then we would find Sam Rami slinging crack on the corner.

Sam’s slinging the shizznit that you’ll want, you’re quick fix but it not like the sustaining almost timeless crack he use to vend. There is a bang and it’s gone type of high, not like his old coming on, and coming on, till it’s Wednesday and you’re still exhaling like you had held you’re breath for a hour. What am I talking about? Well you’re intelligent bunch of readers I think you dig.

Evil Dead 3. I was in the middle of this you-tube-a-thon (you know up till all Saturday night you-tubing with 4 other like minded people calling out footage they wanted to see.) I posed the question, “any you cats seen Army of Darkness”?

I was met with silence. “You know Evil Dead 3”
“Oh I’ve seen Evil Dead I think is that the one with the car and the forest”
“Yes and no”
“Then no”

Searching it I found the “boom stick” clip, (www.google.co.nz/ig?hl=en) and I remembered how entertaining this movie is, even if you haven’t seen the first two it stands alone (because really what were the first two about?) I, in fact saw it before I saw the first two about 15 years ago.
Army of Darkness is pure genius with regards to the script; I mean it’s totally outlandish but so amusing. Bruce Campbell just awesome as Ash, let me just give you a few lines. (Now I’m writing off the type of my head so they may not be exact and it’s been at least seven years since I saw the movie in it entirety.)

“First you want to kill me not you want to kiss me? Blow.”
“Lets dance she-bitch”
“The next one of you primates even touches me”
“Yeah I could have been king”

Ok I read them in type in front of me but you have to trust me, it’s the way he delivers them, like I guess a lot of things in life, delivery and timing this is what we need to master in everything we do, be in baking bread, making of hollandaise sauce or giving fellatio. Army’s of Darkness has delivery and timing, in has originality and it doesn’t, it has cheese and it blue. It’s scallops and black pudding, it is being reviewed by a slightly inebriated writer.
It is what I have taken a most convoluted route of telling you, it is Sam Rimai at his best (in my opinion) great script married with great vision. Now don’t get me wrong I like the Spiderman films heaps, but they seem so plastic, whereas Army’s of Darkness is organic. Spiderman films are forced and formulaic, Darkness is free flowing and chaotic but swirls beautifully, (all this about a border-line spoof, time movie, deep ah)?
