Danny Champion of the World
I hadn’t read Danny Champion of the World. I brought it because I’m the type of person who buys books with the intention of reading them and when the whim takes me am able to indulge in it. So it was a gay time I had reading this total gem of a book.
I have always been a fan of Dahl; all kids who have read or had his books read to them are. I have since got two books of his I have read but could only find at the library.
I began to think that if Wes Anderson is making Fantastic Mr Fox (which will finish, when?) Why not make Danny Champion of the World?
The story could be padded a little but it has the hallmarks of something great and also when I usually think things as such I usually think I want to control the making, example Perfume.
Now you may laugh but I wanted to make Perfume. I was a little dismayed when I found out Tykwer was the lucky soul who was allowed to do this. But with Danny I would love to see someone else other than myself to write and direct this. Someone with vision that is vivid, but a sensibility to be able to bring their vision to life. Tim Burton without the Goth, the Carter, and the spindly weirdness. Jackson without the gayness and grandeur, or Spielberg without the America.
I ain’t got nobody, maybe you do? Maybe Terry Gilliam.
Location, well many possibility’s of course I’d suggest New Zealand but an old European town could suffice, or at last resort a set, (maybe the Overlook, but really).
Cast, all important. William Smith (the father) I immediately thought Ewen Macgregor. Yes Renton, a no-good junky could play the lovable father. (I shit you not I saw him in an episode of ER playing a petty stick-up man in a robbery gone man. I also Jamie Lee Curtis in Battle Star Galactiga (the original), and as for Law & Order who hasn’t been in that; but I digress).
Victor Hazell, owwh what fun to think. This is where the padding of the story could occur as his role in the book isn’t huge but vital. Think Giamatti, or Rickman, or how about wait for it, Vinnie Jones.
Whoever it is they can make the film as the Hazell makes the father and Danny the Champion all the more magical.
So give it a little thought. And think about this, this has been made into a film already as Jeremy Irons as William Smith. Notice I haven’t brought up casting Danny, why? Someone else can work that one out.
Danny Champion of the WORLD a great book and worthy of a film.
