Eagle vs Shark
Much had been talked to me about Eagle vs Shark, being a New Zealand film shot in Wellington by writer director Tiki Waititi (nominated for best short film) I can understand the hype that was attached and I must say I did enjoy it but you know when someone goes on and on about a film, and they talk it up, I mean they talk up not just a storm about a movie they talk up a category 7 Typhoon.
This I think was the case with Eagle vs Shark, but not in that I knew so much about the movie due to some asshole going on and on about different scenes and line (usually myself) but in that there was so much talk due to the above that I was kind of over the film before I saw it.
That being that I must say that I did enjoy it. Though I found the character totally annoying and I didn’t like the way they grew through-out the film they were played extremely well, their aggravating play a testament to the skill of the man cast. There was a pre-adolescence to the cast that I think will be much more relatable to kiwi audiences than a foreign one, but the humour will still be shared, it’s just kiwis will have a more lucid take on it.
Intermittent Guy Caper animation which I didn’t really like was a nice touch to the story in an old-ball sort of way
The script was whimsical, such a gay word to describe it but it was. A New Zealand suburban comedy drama, a kind of me you and everybody, but with a real kiwi flavour that made Eagle vs Shark just that more different.
There is I find about some kiwi films this unpolished edge to them which adds character is some way. It’s an oxymoronic thing to say I know, but there is a roughness to this film that makes it charming. A beautiful score by Flight of the Concord adds to this charm.
All in all this is a good film and totally worth a watch, but isn’t the totally outstanding feature I was not expecting but hoping for no matter the hype.
