I'm not There
I’m not there is not for everyone. In fact I can see more people disliking this film than liking it. I can see young girls being embittered because ‘they didn’t understand it’ and ‘Heath Ledger wasn’t the same’ (but when was Ledger the same) the world is littered with tragedy’s and after watching his performance in ‘I’m not There’ I felt sad once again that there is only two more films of his to come. Ledger isn’t the star, no one is, but I could see he had put in work for this role. Everyone had.
Why people won’t like this is easy to explain. It is too long, it is disjointed, it ostensible has no meaning throughout any characters stories. The five different characters don’t combine or intertwine (apart from Bale and Ledger). This is going to throw off people, this will have some preaching that I’m not There is crap, or in a phillistinic moment the sentence my girlfriend uttered “This is so shit”.
And you know what they are entitled to think this over a lot of other films. It was disjointed, long, and due to it editing and direction very hard to get behind a character and bestow you’re empathy as when you get close the story flicks to another character.
The little black boy was the closest I got to feeling for a character, him and Blanchette character.
Now I know that a lot of you a probably thinking ‘but aren’t all these people Bob Dylan and of course the answer is a lot of yes and a bit of no. It is for me the no that make this film. Five character actors playing the same guy, yeah, that would be ok. We should look at these characters as aspects of Dylan and it’s as easy is that. I men it says in the trailers.
Bale who is outstanding, I mean the man is just such a great actor (devotees of the Guru will know of my man crush on him) he plays Dylan’s righteous misunderstood side.
Ledger the actor he felt he had to put on, the Hollywood Dylan.
Blanchette they rock roll star Dylan caring deeply what the world thinks of him but with the pretence of insouciance, and nihilism.
Gear the outlaw who will help his with his neighbour with their load
Franklin the Dylan stuck in the past unwilling to live his own time.
Whishaw the story teller, poet.
So would I recommend I’m not There. Well if you like Dylan and the above actors then yes. There isn’t much space in this film when then isn’t a Dylan song playing (The soundtrack is suburb I highly recommend it). If you’re looking for an easy to swallow medium rare movie then no. This movie requires thought concentration and to be honest isn’t the be all and end all. This is simply a good movie.
