Ledger wins Oscar

I’m hearing talk of Batman, talk centering around how good Ledger is and how people feel it is in bad taste for the film to marketed around this fact. As I write that I am incredulous to its reasoning, and suspicious of its motives. From what I have seen which is all the previews many times it seems that Ledgers portrayal of the Joker is amazing. The first trailer I saw I was blown away.

To tell you the truth when I found out Ledger had been cast as the Joker ages ago I was for a second doubtful, but then after more seconds of reflecting and pontificating I realized that this indeed could be a master stroke, seems it was.

So why not market this film around that master stroke. Would it not be the same if he were alive. If the best scenes lie with him them you have no choose but to stand on the roof tops and yell hey “hey this movie has this guy in this film and he‘s great“. The fact that he is dead probably would have increased numbers if this film was a stinker, but from the trailers I can’t seeing it being bad, (mind you I did say that about Hancock). So this fact is arbitrary.

There is now discussion over the issue of Ledger's performance being good enough for an Oscar, should he get nominated as there is no way “he” can win it.
To this I think this. Let say he plays the Joker that well, that would be awesome. Let’s say he does get a nomination alive or dead he has every right to it, or at least his memory. The award is for the performance of that year, if it is good enough then he should win, though I think it would be near impossible for there not to be bias if having to consider his performance against others, sympathy happens when you least expect it.

I smell a James Dean like place in history for Ledger. He’s not made it into the diner of broken dreams but he’s sitting in a place just down the road with River Phoenix and the chick from poltergeist. If he wins an Oscar or even gets nominated for one this smell will become stronger, and win or lose there will be debate over whether it was a fair out come.

Ledger was an actor who was getting better and better, of course it is a shame that he is dead. But his death and Batman have cemented him into Hollywood history which for all its unrareness is pretty rare. Yes many actors and artist have died ‘before there time’ but only a few of them go on to become icons. Heath Ledger has the opportunity to become an icon with all this Oscar talk. (I have just been reading comment boards which a lot of people have made the comment that he will win yada yada, I have to see for myself). But lets just say he does win an Oscar. Would that put him in the diner of broken dreams?

No, time does that.

Will he last that long?

Maybe.

Even the cynics I know who have seen it were impressed.
