Saw -
I first read about Saw years ago. I loved the sound of it, guerrilla film making at its best. One million budget, two new film makers and a passion not to sell out. Saw, I think is an outstanding horror film with an outstanding premise.
So I ask the question “where the hell have they gone wrong”. As I ask the question I know where Saw’s unholy spore has gone wrong. They have become a ‘who can top who’ gore fest, I’ll shock them with the removing of the top of the skull, the dissection of the chest cavity, and whatever disgusting thing I can come up with.
The concept of horror (good horror) is anticipation. Now I’m not saying the gore and spatter doesn’t have its place, it does. Only this place was in the 70’s and early 80’s and was called spatter not just cause of all the blood going everywhere, they also splattered shit everywhere.
Now Saw 3 and 4 are the neo splatter. I watched Saw 3 hung-over from a pill and having been at a bar full of pretentious woman that I couldn’t talk to let alone get with, but I massively digress. The fact of the matter is I watched like I was eating tough steak cooked by a blind Jewish mother without the sensation of touch. I felt sick and I was also aggrieved by the total lack of story and the total lack of twist with there big twist at the end.
The morning after this hellish party full of cackling hags who thought they were too good to talk to a poor bald guy who had no friends with him and a want for company. Laying in bed feeling like a sick zombie I foolishly thought that watching Saw 3 was a good idea.
How can one be so wrong. It was sick, it was awful, it was a lets try and top the gore people.
So what the hell was I thinking today when I put Saw 4 on, was I expecting change, progression in the movie making, well kind of. These thoughts make me the fool.
I have turned off very few films in my life and I can chalk Saw 4 on this list. I think I made it through 20 minutes before I said “enough”!
It’s gratuitous gore was just out of order, over the top and to be honest made me feel sick.
Making you’re audience feel sick I don’t think is a very good reaction to inspire. I guess making you’re audience turn off or walk out on you’re film isn’t a good thing (despite what director say in interviews when they wait outside the theatre knowing they have a hit because someone has walked out due to the illness of what they have just seen).
Maybe it’s just that I’m a total pussy. Maybe I have a weak stomach, but the last two Saw’s have just gone a little to far in my opinion. Saw 1 was brilliant, 2 we don’t need to talk about, but 3 and 4 are just gash. They are gash because that type of gross them out gore has no place in cinema. Please for the sake of everything good in this world stop making this disgusting trite. If not for the world just me, stop making them for me. The more they succeed the more they will make, and this folks is just not acceptable.
