Stardust

I read that this movie called Stardust could be compared to The Princess Bride.

“Big shoes to fill” I thought, I mean Princess Bride is a classic. My girlfriend rang me and asked if I wanted to see Superbad, I asked what else was on and she listed what was playing in Wellington, “Stardust” she read. “What time?” I enquired “6, lets see that” “Ok” she said, I could detect a note of confusion in her voice, she knew nothing of this movie and neither did I, just that it had been hailed to be as good as Princess Bride.

Like I said, bold call, a worthy contender, but Princess Bride has something just a little more special about it, that is not to say that Stardust isn’t a special film, this is a really, really cool film. This is another generations Princess Bride, well, would be if there wasn’t a string of fantasy movies about to land.

Cast, superb. Michelle Pfeiffer is so god damn hot (in places), Claire Danes I loved although she seemed to try a little too hard at times, Robert DeNiro having fun and stealing the show and Ricky Jervais is one of the most funny human beings on earth. He could read a shopping list and make it sound funny. “You ‘avin a laugh?” how can one man make this so funny.

The whole fantasy “other world” lured me in from the start and kept me enamoured for the whole film, almost a film I didn’t want to end. A great fantasy tale that would take too long to explain and would probably confuse you all.

The thing that makes this comparable to Princess Bride is the little touches. Like Peter Cook saying “marriage” or the conversation as Mandy and Carey are duelling, there is this warm feeling attached to this film. Even the evil is attractive like all evil should be in movie such as these. I was laughing at the thought of the last remaining Prince (see it you’ll know what I’m talking about) being played by Steve Coogan.

I alluded to a string of new fantasy movies about to land and I’m excited, seeing Stardust has me roaming schools looking for children to take to the movies as an excuse to see them all (I am joking really). I can’t wait, they are all looking so cool. (Yes I’m a film reviewer films can be “so cool“).

Stardust, totally worth seeing no matter how old you are.
