Superbad

Superbad, is, super funny.

Seth Rogan has a wit and way for giving comedy that to me is reminiscent of the Farrelly brother, though it’s subtler than them, in a more vulgar way.

There seems to be however striking similarities is his formula of writing. If we look at the ‘40 year old virgin’ and ‘Superbad’ from the get go, the conversations are in essence the same. ‘40 year old virgin’ starts with a conversation between two guys, one is confessing to what he did on his weekend which involved watching bestiality on stage. He then goes on to say that though you’d think that a woman being “done” by a horse would be an awesome sight, he in fact felt sorry for the horse. It was this tiny piece in the ending of the dialogue that made the conversation transcend simple vulgarity, instead it gave us a insight to both characters, but real insight into Rogan’s character, one who is debauched, but one who is capable of sympathy.

Superbad begins with two teenagers discussing their options for the upcoming challenge of moving to college. But instead of talking of the classes they might take, they are talking about the ins and outs of which porn site to subscribe to. It is in essence the same as ‘40 year old‘, in the fact it’s a vulgar conversation (it is brought to us in the form of two teenagers so it is at their level) but again we gain insight to the two main protagonists, we see Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as they are from the start, their interaction sets thre characters for the rest of the film.

I’m not going to go on about direction photograph art dep etc. Thought I will say that I did love the sexy girls in the film although it did however make me feel like quiet the paedophile but I’m cool with that (shit walking through any city during summer holidays will can understand) the script is the genius in this film, added to that Cera, Mintz-Plasse, and Hill.

Michael Cera I love, his way, and mannerisms that makes me think that this young man will be big, real big, he will be a great character actor and I predict him to earn a Oscar nomination within the next ten years. His portray of George Michael is something he needs to distance himself from as he is danger of the Anne Hathaway type cast aura. Though this is what has made him the star he is, and the big star he will become. His uncomfortable looks when he finds himself facing “rough” situations are just beautiful. Quotes from Arrested Development.
“Hey George Michael I saw you today”
“Are you sure, I mean was it the singer songwriter George Michael”

“Uncle Tobias showed me some really rough photos, I mean they were really rough”

“Don’t leave you’re uncle T-Bag hanging”
“Please don’t call yourself that”
(Gob) “Oh this is heart-breaking, George Michael put you’re head next to his drainage shunt.”

Fogell aka McLovin is the best character in this film. I have been recently given a couple of Zippo’s one I will have either Fogell or McLovin engraved with. He is just the king of the nerds.

All in all this film is worth a look if you’re after a comedy that will keep you engaged with its humour and the enamour you will feel for the characters. Well written very good casting very enjoyable, see it on DVD its not 1.5 hours wasted I guarantee.
