The Worlds Fastest Indian
June 18th 2007 02:46
My mother would harp on to me “you need to see the Worlds Fastest Indian”. I would always say yeah, yeah I’ll get to it, this morning I did.
Proud.
This is how I felt. Proud to be from New Zealand, proud of the in-grained ingenuity that we Kiwi’s often have. Then there’s the film. Roger Donaldson crafts a beautiful story around Burt Munroe and Tony Hopkins is amazing and lovable as the lead. The pacing is perfect at no point was I board knowing the film would lead up to the final speed testing.
Hopkins character wins over every one he meets till in a tear jerking scene they (the competitors) show the admiration for him. He shows also in a scene a man who is full of piss and vinegar and is insulting in a scene but makes it seem like a big joke. He doesn’t accept no for an answer to anything he is driven to do and I think this is the thing I admire most about this character and the film. At one point a was waving my finger at the screen yelling “fuck yeah” I was so enamoured with the story.
Having seen this film I was inspired to write about it as I don’t think it did so well around the world and it should have. It was huge here as it was about a Kiwi, but more than that it was about a man, a man who let nothing stand in his way. This is a film that you should watch simple as that, you watch it and you think I’m wrong feel free to tell me, but I know you will agree with me.

This was a good film indeed, although I don't think its Roger Donaldson's best. Smash Palace is my favourite New Zealand flick, and arguably Donaldson's best, although I rank the Hollywood No Way Out, which he helmed as an exceptional espionage thriller (and the best performance from Costner too) ...

Not what I expected.
Definitely Hopkins show he really can act in this. He is so slick that I look at this character and see so many people that I have seen working in workshops and tinkering. He could almost be someones elderly father with skills in fitting and turning.
I was stuck in Hotel for about a month for a contract job and saw this about three times. Only once in its entirity, (Damn cable TV)
When up against the usual trripe from hollowood it stand appart like an old style British drama action.

I used to babysit for John and Joanne.
I've been telling my papa to get together with John and contact the producer, so they can do a commentary , maybe get Kelly Johnson in on it as well, for a DVD release of Carry Me Back, as I don't think its available on DVD ....
